Why Vietnamese students are shifting study destinations – and what Europe must do

Why Vietnamese students are shifting study destinations
– and what Europe must do

While India and China continue to grab headlines, Vietnam is quietly making moves.

The macro signals are strong:

  • 7.52% GDP growth (H1 2025)

  • $21.5B in FDI, driven by high-tech

  • Digital economy booming

  • Rising demand for globally trained, job-ready talent

  • Labour market pressures: Demand surging in AI, electronics, agritech, logistics

  • Skills focus: tech-savvy, globally trained, job-ready graduates

Europe is starting to catch on as 13,000+ Vietnamese students are enrolled across Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Finland in 2023/24.

Germany led the pack with 5,684 enrolments. The numbers are not massive, but the momentum is real.

On the flip side, the usual “Big Four” are showing signs of slowdown (Student visa grants Q1 24 vs Q1 25) :

  • AUS -37%

  • UK: -13%

  • New Zealand: -6%

  • US: was growing, but cracks are showing - F1 visas for Vietnamese students dropped by 13% in March–April, and 17% in May YoY.

The opportunity is clear. The only question now is: Will Europe move early, or wait too long?

Vietnam stands out as a high-potential source market - requiring modest investment, supported by reputable agencies, and propelled by strong word-of-mouth and alumni success stories. Industry partnerships and graduate achievements further enhance its organic growth and appeal.
