Australia’s ELICOS English language sector welcomed a record 179,342 international students in 2018, according to the annual report released by peak body English Australia this week, with the proportion of agent bookings also increasing. The National ELICOS Market Report 2018, seen by StudyTravel Magazine, shows a one per cent increase in international students in 2018, the sixth consecutive year of growth. The English Australia report builds on the Department of Education and Training full-year data on student visa holders, and incorporates all visa types for English language study.
China remained the top source country with 42,596 students, a relatively flat year, while second-placed Japan increased slightly to 25,711 students, and Brazil, in third place, dropped by three per cent to 15,674 students, albeit following bumper growth in 2017. Brett said, “Australia’s ELICOS providers have been focussing on Latin America and capitalising on the positive results across the region. Our market share of students from Colombia has increased following this heightened level of activity combined with strong agent support.”
The National ELICOS Market Report 2018 was the 23rd edition produced by English Australia, and for the second year was conducted in partnership with Bonard. The results were based on a record response of 215 schools, including 95 per cent of English Australia’s membership.The economic impact of the ELICOS sector increased to AUS$2.25 billion (US$1.75 billion) in 2018, the authors estimate, a 1.4 per cent increase compared with the previous year.
